Skelin

About

Slightly further up the coast from the hustle and bustle of southern Dalmatia, lies the peaceful Skelin Wine Estate, a small b&b and winery tucked away on the Miljevci plateau just outside of the town of Šibenik.

The winery has been in the family for five generations, since Joso Skelin and his family cleared and planted the original plot entirely by hand, hauling water on their backs in the blistering summers, and clearing stones during the winters.

Now spanning an impressive 23 hectares, the vineyards are situated on a plain near the village of Drinovci, right where the Krka and Čikola rivers meet. Here the cool river breezes help moderate the intense summer heat, and the terra rosa (red clay) soil, scattered with large stones, offers a dramatic and dynamic microclimate that provides exceptional conditions for their grapes to achieve depth, concentration and distinct character.

Tomislav Skelin now runs the winery, and continues his family’s legacy by focusing on their Dalmatian roots and indigenous varietals, consisting of local white grapes such as Debit, Maraština and an exciting inland expression of Pošip, as well as reds such as Plavina and the rare and delicate grape, Lasin.

The Skelin cellar is a balance of the traditional practices from their family and modern techniques, utilizing stainless steel tanks and temperature-controlled fermentation in production.

Tomislav is Dalmatian at heart, laid back and most concerned with enjoying the peace that his estate offers. His focus these days is simply bringing people together at their inn for family gatherings and events, and sharing approachable expressions of their local terroir through their enjoyable wines.
