Pinot Noir in Štajerska

We are always reminded of the insane potential of Pinot Noir in Štajerska when we look into our personal stash of what to drink today and see all of the Slovenian Pinots!

One of the most exciting lineups is tasting through our Slovenian Pinot Noirs: all from the same region, but still so different stylistically.

The Štajerska region in Northeast Slovenia (Lower Styria) is an exceptional area to grow Pinot Noir. This was cemented all the way back to the mid-12th century when French Carthusian monks intentionally settled in this region and brought with them Pinot Noir clones and Chardonnay vines.

It is an intensely hilly area with higher altitudes, providing fluctuating temperatures of hot summers and cold winters. The deep valleys and hills allow for plenty of cool winds to come through the night to offer the balance and elegance needed for bright, aromatic, and complex Pinot Noir.

But even within Štajerska, there is so much diversity within so many microclimates. Taste through and you can see the differences in Pinot Noir from the steep slopes of Lipoglav (Sanctum), the southern exposed marl-rich sandy soils of Ritoznoj (Heaps Good Wine), and the steep wind-rich terraced vineyards of Haloze Hills (Pullus).

These wines are beautiful old-world Pinot Noir, through and through. And lastly (as is the case with so much of our portfolio) all of these wines offer so much value. The complexity, elegance and sheer enjoyability of these wines for the money is unrivaled.

If you are sleeping on Slovenian Pinot Noir… time to wake up!
